One off hand painted Charlotte Olympia Pop Art Dolly’s for charity!

It has been 3 year since I painted 100 pairs of limited edition Charlotte Olympia Dolly’s for Art Basel in 2012!  It was a wonderful to reminisce last week when I painted a one off pair of Pop art Lichtenstein Dolly’s for a Bedales charity auction.

The shoes are of particular importance to me as It was my painted Dolly’s that got the attention of the fashion world, where upon i decided to embrace my new fashion audience and expand my artistic canvases from not only hand painted body art, to fashion accessories.

Dolly heaven part 1: Charlotte Olympia hand painted Dolly-meets-Picasso

This is part 1 of 6 posts, showing the behind the scenes of the Charlotte Olympia, Neiman Marcus collaboration, where i as the artist, was commissioned to hand paint 100 limited edition pairs of Charlotte’s signature shoe: The Dolly. My previous post, skims over the project that was redeveloped from last years popular hand painted Dolly’s that we made for Vogue Fashion Night Out. I am a british artist, specialising in painting and photography, in particular body painting. I exhibit internationally with my gallery, The Cynthia Corbett Gallery, but i love doing exciting projects like this MAMMOTH one: a three month project of solid hand painting canvas shoes being launched and sold by Neiman Marcus in their Bal Harbour Miami store, last December 2012. Watch the making of the shoes through these 6 posts and enjoy!x

6 great artists to inspire the Dolly: Pablo Picasso, one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, is widely known for co-founding the Cubist movement, His revolutionary artistic accomplishments brought him universal renown.  Dolly meets Picasso: for me, the quirky one! Fun and frivolous.

this was my original design for the Dolly-meets-Picasso although after the first pair, i realised i had to simplify it as it was too time consuming to recreate over 20 pairs. So only one pair exist in this design, a true one-off and stupidly i forgot to take a picture of it in its final glory, but i promise it stayed true to the above.

the design evolves and becomes more simple, but goes back to a similar idea from last years Dolly Picasso, exaggerating the eyes, lips and fingers, see below

incorporating little bits of picasso, the red hat hintThe final Dolly meets Picasso, is vibrant, fun and full of personality! The Dolly is not actually finished in these shots as there is still masking tape on parts of the shoe, but you get the gist!

Dolly meets Picasso, keeps her beady eyes on you! She has her little red hat on, and a collar of zig zag colour!x Boyarde.com

Dolly Heaven part 3! Hand painted Charlotte Olympia Dolly meets Mondrian

6 great Artists to inspire the design: Piet Mondrian: a pivotal artist taking part in the De Stijl movement, his 1930s primary colour grid paintings, repeated throughout decades of fashion, gave impact through simplicity and structure. Transfer this inspiration onto the Dolly and the impact is just as great. I could not have predicted just how many brushes i would go through for this project. Thank you to Jacksons Art Supplies by Putney Bridge, for having all the supply of brushes, paint and sprays that i needed!

last years mondrian inspired dolly with a hint of gold. If you walked down the street with these shoes on, you would sure to be stopped every step of the way!

6 great Artists to inspire the design: Jackson Pollock was a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. A master of ‘action’ art, he would flick, splat and dribble paint over his horizontal canvass. The images were often chaotic, almost claustrophobic, with paint fighting paint, but the images were still a visual feast of colour and commotion. What better than to smatter a Dolly and bring two opposites together in an apocalypse! A little dramatic i know, but seriously if you saw the mess i created whilst making this, knowing i was splashing and splattering these exquisitely crafted shoes, you may say the same thing! But what fun it was…. MESS EVERYWHERE!

these Pollock inspired Dollys have been based paint coated in a cream colour with pinky blobs, ready for their splashing, but already, whilst waiting, they are getting splattered by others being splattered!

this is just the beginning!

the final splash of gold

this is definitely a more mature and confident Dolly meets Pollock as opposed to last years that was more ‘dainty’ see below:

last years Pollock Dolly were less aggressive and with less attitude. This year, no splatter too big!

This Dolly has got balls of steel!

sadly i forgot to take any final pictures of the Dolly with their Gold platform with the masking tape taken off. The opposites attract for the clean design of the Dolly and the magnificent gold island platform combined with the chaos of the paint, make it a very striking shoe.

just imagine it, if you can with the tape peeled off to reveal the signature Gold Dolly platform. Gorgeous! yes please! I had SO much fun making this design and i had paint in my hair, my nails, on my face, my ears, my clothes, for days!!!!

Dolly heaven part 6! Charlotte Olympia hand painted Abstraction Dolly meets Howard Hodgkin

The Abstraction Dolly: 6 great Artists to inspire the design: the final artist: Howard Hodgkin is a British living ‘semi abstract’ artist, whose innovative colourful canvass, often spanning over 5 years just to make one piece (building layer upon layer of oil paint over and across the  canvas and its frame), creates art with vaguely recognisable shapes through bold colours. Some of the paint is so thick, the painting starts to become 3-D.

Howard Hodgkin: Dinner at Smith Square.

Painting a Dolly inspired Hodgkin, would mean freeing the contraints of the paint brush, layering up the paint and gliding over and around its shape. Although i found the process therapeutic and the final designs were a delightful rainbow of colour, relaying Hodgkin’s painting principles onto the limited space and shape of the shoe, proved extremely tricky, as one would get into the ‘swoop’ and ‘sweep’ of the technique, there wasn’t enough shoe or canvas to allow the paint brush to lead the way. Never the less, it was great fun to make.

with the added swoop of gold, it lifts the rainbow colours and draws even more attention. Similar to the Pollock design, these Hodgkin inspired abstract Dollys create a symbios between the loose, spontaneous smothering of paint and the clean, angled, sublime structure of the Dolly itself. Harmony!
